Via Apulia
Our Lady of Madia. 19th century fresco by Sabino Recchia, consolidated and retouched. Once again, one of his distinctive traits is highlighted, consisting of the detached little finger. Painted in honor of the patron saint of Monopoli, it shows the traits of her ancient representation. There are traces of gold color on the crown. Cleaned of dust, the original colors emerged.
In via Apulia (the ancient Fumarulo road), we meet a third
Marian shrine, but this time dedicated to the Madonna della Madia of Monopoli. This was the most important celebration of the votive aedicules; it was held on 15 August and it would seem that in the last editions (around 1960), the festival reached as far as nearby via Bovio which, for the occasion, was embellished with tissue paper flags. In the opinion of Don Nicola Pellegrino, the painting of the Madonna della Madia is at 90% by the Castellanese painter Sabino Recchia (1821-1879). But the Madia newsstand was already present in 1760; the notary Leonardo Invitti (Municipal Archive) informs us of this who, went to the house of Onofrio Vitti (di Giampaolo) located "in the neighborhood of the inchiancata, and properly near the image of the Virgin of the Madia...", in order to collect his will. And the inchiancata (or the Chiancata) which for the most part must have been made up of outcropping and suitably leveled rocky banks was located right nearby, in the old vico Chiancata, corresponding to today's via Disfida di Barletta.
