02 – MADONNA DELLA VETRANA NEWSSTAND

Edicule of the Madonna della Vetrana. Fresco attributed to Sabino Recchia for his instinctive stroke of the detached little finger. Probably the last of the frescoes he painted due to the blue mantle (the Vetrana first wore a red dress according to the representations) has been greatly altered. Previously restored, it was only subsequently cleaned superficially and consolidated.

Located in via Brindisi (the ancient Rocco road) near number 12, this fresco of the Madonna della Vetrana was attributed by Don Nicola Pellegrino to the local painter Sabino Recchia (1821-1879), Pietro and Anna Francesca Cisternino . The Madonna della Vetrana is the protector of Castellana since, thanks to her intercession, in 1691 our city was freed from the terrible scourge of the plague. We read in the text of the novena to M.SS. della Vetrana: "We thank you, Most Holy Virgin Mary of Vetrana, for having made known the admirable virtue of the oil of your lamp, while anyone who anointed himself with it was free from mortal contagion: we ask you again to soothe our hearts with oil of holy charity. Ave Maria…"
