16 – MADONNA DELLA VETRANA NEWSSTAND

Via Armando Diaz

Valuable newsstand, the only one entirely carved perhaps by local craftsmen in limestone, probably contained an ancient image of the Madonna della Vetrana, no longer present today. The dating and the writing are important. Awaiting restoration.

In via Armando Diaz (better known as "la via du brìece", for years brecciated, and therefore without chianche paving, so as to allow the "traìni" to go up towards corso Italia without the animals slipping on the chiancata), at number 90, we have the opportunity to appreciate the beautiful 1886 aedicule, dedicated to the Madonna della Vetrana, probably the work of Castellanese stonemasons. The aedicule not far from Piazza Caduti Castellanesi was once occupied by the large vegetable garden of San Sebastiano, which belonged to the Paolotti friars, whose convent was annexed to the church of San Giuseppe. The garden took its name from the destroyed little church of S. Sebastiano, demolished around 1884, and which was located between Piazza Caduti and Largo Porta Grande, in the middle of the street.
