Alley Eleonora Fonseca
Madonna of the Cross, twentieth century, the only painting on canvas that represents a Madonna that is no longer venerated. Unknown author of discreet hand. Large size almost a meter by 45/50. It has not been recently restored and is in a poor state of conservation with several alterations.
Taking via Eleonora Fonseca, and turning into the beautiful alley immediately on the right, you can admire the large newsstand dedicated to the Madonna della Croce. The locals remembered when, in the piazzetta, the month of May was celebrated, a religious ritual dedicated to the Madonna, and today almost completely disappeared. According to some, the canvas was retouched by the late photographer-painter Nicola Leone. In 1790, the nearby vico Centorta was known as the small road of Santa Maria della Stella. In fact, in the 1877 plan it is reported as vico Stella. Therefore it is very probable that a further aedicule was placed there, but this time dedicated to the Madonna del Carmine, or the Madonna della Stella, as she was better identified by the people, due to the presence of a star with a hanging tail, symbol of Mary's virginity , with which it is always depicted.
