Spirito Santo neighborhood road
Edicule carved in high relief with the symbol of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove. Well carved white stone. A modern example of devotion.
Along the ascent of the Spirito Santo local road, you come across a first aedicule dedicated to the Holy Spirit, which the residents of the area wanted to place as a symbol of Christian faith and in memory of the little church which gave its name to the district. Long gone, the chapel was located right at the end of the slope, near the country house that houses the aedicule dedicated to the Medici Saints Cosma and Damiano. The owners of the time took care to write down on a simple plaque: "Casina / Spirito Santo / construct / AD 1929 / RF" The little church of the Holy Spirit was built by the romìto friar Ludovico di Maggio, from Martina, who lived in tower next to it, and was buried right in the church, according to his testamentary disposition of 1629. The chapel was visited in 1635 by the vicar de Nicolò. During the holy visit of 1738 conducted by the vicar Zappulli, "two altars were found stripped, and the astrich (roof) of the church is unhealthy..." (M. Lanera, "Gli atti della Santa Visita del 1738" , p. 63, nos.116-117). In 1849, the rural church of the Spirito Santo had already disappeared, as can be seen from a rental contract dating back to 8 July of that year, when the primicerio don Leopoldo Leone rented a land with olive trees to some Campanellis "the closed one that is , within which there is the ancient rural church of the Holy Spirit…” (State Archives of Bari, notary P. Fanelli, Castellana, a.1849, c.293r).
