The abbess extends her hand to a young nobleman so that he too could extend his greetings. A ritual that of kissing the hand that brought into being the power of women over men, prostrate themselves out of respect and reverence. The young boy is undoubtedly a nobleman as he wears a cloak with the coat of arms of Castellana Grotte, on his head he wears a crown. This rite was reserved for the male clergy but this painting also highlights the reverence that the nobility had for the episcopal power then held by the abbesses.
