Noblewoman abbesses condemned to seclusion since they were children. In Conversano, as in the neighboring towns, the nobles aspired to boast an Abbess in the family and were ready to shell out a substantial dowry: six hundred ducats. The fate of these poor girls had already been decided, even against their will so they had no choice but to take refuge in dreams.
