01 – MADONNA DEGLI ANGELI NEWSSTAND

Via Madonna degli Angeli

Aedicule dedicated to the Madonna degli Angeli. The second intervention of the newsstand was carried out with a restoration of the stone niche by eliminating plastic flower frills and cleaning it with the addition of stencils as well as covering the gray showcase with a neutral color to make it more usable.

In the narrow street of the same name in the ancient nucleus, a short distance from the site where the Porta delle Olive was located, is the aedicula dedicated to the Madonna degli Angeli, probably the best known of the Marian ones. The original canvas, stolen about thirty years ago, must have been quite ancient, and depicted a Madonna with Child among some angels engrossed in playing a lullaby to the Sleeping Child in his Mother's arms. The image was venerated on August 2, the day dedicated to the Madonna degli Angeli, when a nice little party was also set up in the seventeenth-century street which, having fallen into disuse, was reorganized for several years by Vito Della Rosa. On the other hand, the new image that for years has been filling the void left by the original painting is due to the Castellanese painter Tonio Pace. A plaque in the upper left (for those looking at the tabernacle), located on the facade of a house dated 1601, exhorts the passer-by: "In nomine Iesu omne genu flectatur" (In the name of Jesus, bend every knee). The first recovery of the newsstand was carried out in August 2004 by CE.RI.CA. (Centro Ricerche Castellanese onlus), with the patronage of the Municipality of Castellana Grotte, and the contribution of Vito Della Rosa and other citizens. Subsequently by the Pro Loco.
